Mantids are relatively large insects that range in size from 50-120 mm (2-5 inches) long, depending on the species. They have a triangular head, widely spaced eyes, an elongated prothorax and abdomen, and large forelegs which are used to capture and hold prey. Mantids are usually brown, green, yellow, or a combination of all three colors. Nymphs resemble the adult form but are smaller. Eggs are laid in masses covered with a frothy secretion that browns and hardens over time.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=”Quick Facts” use_icon=”on” font_icon=”||fa||900″ icon_color=”#F15625″ image_icon_width=”36px” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_level=”h1″ header_text_align=”center” background_color=”#FEBD3B” custom_padding=”6%|6%|6%|6%|true|true” global_colors_info=”{}”]

There are about 20 species of mantids in the United States.

Mantids are commonly observed on flowers waiting for foraging insects.

Mantids can be efficient biological control agents but since they are ambush predators, the magnitude of their biocontrol services in managed landscapes can be limited.

[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb image=”https://agsci.colostate.edu/divi-agbio/wp-content/uploads/sites/127/2022/03/14.-adult-European-mantid-scaled-1.jpg” alt=”Adult European Mantid” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” body_line_height=”1.4em” image_icon_custom_margin=”||-22px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Adult European mantid. Image credit: Whitney Cranshaw, Colorado State University, Bugwood.org

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb image=”https://agsci.colostate.edu/agbio/wp-content/uploads/sites/127/2023/09/adult-european-mantid-jpg.webp” alt=”Adult European Mantid” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” body_line_height=”1.4em” image_icon_custom_margin=”||-22px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Adult of European mantid feeding on a grasshopper. Image credits: Whitney Cranshaw, Colorado State University, Bugwood.org

[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb image=”https://agsci.colostate.edu/agbio/wp-content/uploads/sites/127/2023/09/mantid-nymph-jpg.webp” alt=”Adult European Mantid” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” body_line_height=”1.4em” image_icon_custom_margin=”||-22px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Mantid nymph.
