Information for businesses and organizations interested in establishing an Internship with the Department of Animal Sciences. Thank you very much for your interest in setting up an internship through Colorado State University’s Equine Science Program. The faculty of the Equine Sciences program feels that internships are a vital part of a student’s education. Why should I take on a student intern?
There are many benefits to hiring a student intern including but not limited to: Helps to find future employees and allows you to evaluate a potential new hire; Help to increase productivity especially during peak times such as breeding or show season; Help to enhance perspective by bringing in new, fresh ideas and strong skill sets to the business; Can be a cost effective way to recruit motivated and trained students while giving them the opportunity to gain experience and make connections within the industry; Helps to build a relationship with Colorado State University’s Equine Science Program.

Where does a student find an internship?
Students may find internships through CareerRam, the internship coordinator (Tiare Santistevan), their advisors and professors or they may find one themselves. All internships must be approved by the student’s advisor and the internship coordinator. Students may not do an internship with family and or current/past trainers.

When is a good time for a student to do an internship?
A student may complete an internship in the fall, spring or summer semesters. It is not recommended that a student complete an internship the last semester of their senior year. The student must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. It is recommended that the student have completed appropriate course work that may benefit them during the internship (i.e. Take ANEQ344 prior to doing an internship at a breeding facility).

How many hours does a student have to work?
A student must complete a minimum of forty-five (45) hours per semester credit they would like to receive. An Equine Science student is required to have a minimum of 2 credits of an internship for their degree program unless they study abroad. A maximum of 6 credits may be used towards graduation requirements. A student may work additional hours for the experience.

As a cooperator, what am I required to do?
The cooperator is to provide supervision and guidance in the performance of the established objectives and internship activities, transmit to the Internship Coordinator the forms required to assist the intern in receiving credit for the internship and notify the Coordinator of any changes to the internship or problems that may arise during the experience.

Are internships paid?
Internships may be paid or unpaid. Some internships will cover room and board; some will provide a small stipend while others will just provide the experience. This is to be discussed between the student and the Cooperator. For off-campus internships, if the student receives any remuneration for the internship, including but not limited to pay, room or board, the student is NOT covered by CSU’s workers’ compensation but is covered by the host’s workers’ compensation or insurance. If the student does not receive any remuneration for an off-­‐campus internship, CSU workers’ compensation covers the student.

How do I set up an internship?
Contact the Internship Coordinator, Beka Crocket or Tiare Santistevan, and describe the internship opportunity. Beka and Tiare will talk with you more about the process and the paperwork and will communicate the opportunity to the students.
