Rachelle Rehberg Awarded the Fort Collins Area Alumni Panhellenic Bobbie Douglas Alumna Scholarship
April 2019 – Congratulations to PhD candidate, Rachelle Rehberg, who received the Fort Collins Area Alumni Panhellenic Bobbie Douglas Alumna Scholarship! The scholarship recognizes students who continue to further their education while staying actively involved with their alumnae and collegiate chapters, as well as the Panhellenic community in Fort Collins. Rachelle had the opportunity to discuss her research and career goals and was honored at an award ceremony on Saturday, April 27th.
Molly McLaughlin wins poster competition at RMSETAC Conference
April 2019 – PhD candidate Molly McLaughlin received first place in the poster competition at the Rocky Mountain Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (RMSETAC). The meeting was held in Denver, CO on April 25 and 26. Molly’s poster was titled “Toxicological and Chemical Assessment of Water Quality Downstream of NPDES Oil and Gas Produced Water Discharges.” The poster discussed results of two papers that are currently in preparation for publication. Fracking and Health: Ask an Expert “Biocide use in Fracking”
January 2019 – Dr. Thomas Borch discusses why biocides are used in fracking with The Endocrine Disruption Exchange, highlighting the most commonly used chemicals and describing the complexities of identifying and measuring them in produced water. Dr. Borch also discusses how release into the environment can impact public health, including through the development of antimicrobial resistant genes. (Listen here).

Ellen Daugherty receives ASA, CSSA, SSSA 2018 Future Leaders in Science Award
Washington, D.C., January 8, 2018 – The American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) have selected the 2018 ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Future Leaders in Science Award recipients. Ellen Daugherty is one of 18 graduate students members who will receive the award in recognition of her interest and engagement in science advocacy. Award winners receive a trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Congressional Visits Day on March 8, where they will meet with their members of Congress and advocate for food, agriculture and natural resources research.
Ellen is a sixth year Ph.D. candidate in the Chemistry program and performs research on the role organic carbon-mineral interactions play in soil carbon storage and iron and carbon cycling.

A new twist on uranium’s origin story!

Scientists sampled a 650-foot deep sediment core from roll-front uranium deposits at an unmined site at Wyoming’s Smith Ranch Highlands.
