BYRNE PLANT GENETICS RESEARCH PROGRAM
The Byrne lab researches the genetic diversity of crop plants and their relatives with the goal of discovering useful variation for Colorado growing conditions. Most studies have been conducted on wheat, but projects have also included dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), canola (Brassica napus), camelina (Camelina sativa), and rye (Secale cereale). An overriding theme has been to associate genotype with phenotype by using molecular marker analysis in appropriate populations. Other projects have dealt with quantifying pollen-mediated gene flow in wheat and maize, and surveying the microbiome of wheat root, rhizosphere, and leaf.
