John Loomis Symposium

Thursday, December 1, 2016
Colorado State University, Lory Student Center, Ballrooms C & D
Symposium: 8:30am – 5pm
Reception: 5-6pm
Dinner and stories: 6:00-7:30pm

For four decades, John Loomis has been a leader in the field of environmental and resource economics.  His research has fundamentally shaped economic valuation of non-marketed natural resources and the use of such values by government agencies. John’s scholarly contributions (he has published four books and over 250 refereed journal articles) and his contributions to practical applications of non-market valuation to government programs and policy are significant.  In addition, John has been a mentor and role model for hundreds of graduate students. At Colorado State University he is valued as a talented, hardworking economist and a great colleague and friend.

But, as John would appreciate, the end of the day comes even when the powder is deep and more snow is falling.  By fully retiring from academic life, he will have the freedom to work (and ski) on his own schedule.  And he intends to do lots of both.  To honor John and celebrate his many accomplishments, we are organizing The Loomis Symposium to be held December 1, 2016 here at Colorado State University.  This will be an all-day affair, with presentations by noted environmental economists, former and current graduate students, colleagues across Colorado State University, and government agency employees. The symposium will include a panel discussion, research presentations, and multiple opportunities to express gratitude for our colleague John Loomis. In the evening, there will be a gala banquet to honor John’s professional and personal contributions.

We are writing in hopes that you will join us for this seminal event. Registration is strongly recommended for the day event and is required for the evening reception and dinner.  You can register online at by November 16.  If you have question, please call Donna Sosna at (970) 491-6325.

We hope many of you will be able to participate in this event.  For those who can’t make it, we welcome notes, cards or letters that can be shared with John.  These should be sent to Loomis Symposium, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1172.
