APRIL 3, Eliza Pennypacker, ASLA, Department Head and Professor at Penn State speaks with Stuart Echol

Eliza Pennypacker is department head and professor of landscape architecture and the Stuckeman Chair in Integrative Design at Pennsylvania State University. Eliza Pennypacker has been a faculty member in Penn State’s Department of Landscape Architecture since 1982. She has taught a wide range of courses, including the History of Landscape Architecture, First-Year Seminar, and all levels of design studio, including the semester abroad. Pennypacker’s other research track focuses on “artful rainwater design” (ARD): stormwater management that not only mitigates quality and quantity of runoff, but celebrates rainwater in a design that educates or entertains visitors. In collaboration with Stuart Echols, she has written and presented on this topic extensively and has published a book, Artful Rainwater Design: Creative Ways to Manage Stormwater, published in 2015.

APRIL 5, Martha Schwartz, FASLA, Principal of Martha Schwartz Partners

Martha Schwartz is a landscape architect and artist with major interests in cities, communities and the urban landscape. As principal of Martha Schwartz Partners, she has over 35 years of experience as a landscape architect, urbanist and artist on a wide variety of projects located around the world with a variety of world-renowned architects. She is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes including the Honorary Royal Designer for Industry Award from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce for her outstanding contribution to UK design; the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award; the Women in Design Award for Excellence from the Boston Society of Architects; a Doctor of Science from the University of Ulster in Belfast, Ireland; a fellowship from the Urban Design Institute; visiting residencies at Radcliffe College and the American Academy in Rome; an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Institute of British Architects and most recently a Council of Fellows Award by the American Society of Landscape Architects. Martha Schwartz is a tenured Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a founding member of the Working Group of Sustainable Cities at Harvard University. She has lectured both nationally and internationally about sustainable cities and the urban landscape, and her work has been featured widely in publications as well as gallery exhibitions.

APRIL 6, David Gouverneur, Associate Professor at PENN

David Gouverneur is Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching landscape urbanism studios, cross-disciplinary design studios and case study courses with emphasis on developing countries. He is also Professor Emeritus of Universidad Rafael Urdaneta in Maracaibo, Venezuela. David served as Adjunct Secretary of City Planning and Vice-Minister of Urban Development of Venezuela. He co-founded the Urban Design Program and was Director of the Mayor’s Institute in City Design at Universidad Metropolitana, Caracas. He was also the the Chair of the architecture program at Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas. For 34 years, he has taught architecture, urban design and city planning. His main areas of research are sustainable growth of new informal settlements, coastal management, and rehabilitation of cultural landscapes. His professional practice focuses on upgrading informal settlements, historic districts, new centralities and rehabilitation of areas affected by natural events. These ideas are addressed in his most recent publication, Planning and Design for Future Informal Settlements: Shaping the Self-Constructed City. David received his Architecture degree from Universidad Simon Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela and his Masters of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University.

APRIL 7, Chris Grubbs, Architectural Illustrator

With a Master of Architecture degree from Washington State University in Saint Louis, he quickly stopped practicing architecture in order to start describing it, with art and through illustrations and design consultation for his clients. In 2005, he received the Hugh Ferris Memorial Prize, the American Society of Architectural Illustrator’s highest award. And in 2016, he established an archive of his drawings at the Library of Congress.

APRIL 13, Gerdo P. Aquino, FASLA, CEO and Principal of SWA

Gerdo P. Aquino is an urban designer and landscape architect with 20 years of experience in the planning, design and construction of public and private projects throughout the United States, and internationally. Since joining SWA in 1996, he has had much success in solving a wide range of environmental landscape design problems for projects where open space, density, and place-making are key issues. Aquino is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture Master’s Degree Program at the University of Southern California where his design studios focus on landscape infrastructure and its application to urban areas challenged by issues related to density, environmental degradation, health and accessibility.

LAND Lecture: Jason Himick, Project landscape architect at Confluent Design in Boulder will be visiting with students and lecturing on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in NESB B101.

Fall Into Landscape Architecture Lecture Series 2015: On November 19, Dan Euser, landscape architect and found of Dew, Inc, lectured on his water feature designs for the National 911 Memorial in NYC. On Novmeber 20, Chip Sullivan, landscape architect and professor at University of California Berkeley, lectured on drawing and storyboarding the landscape. He also led the students on an evening sketchwalk around Old Town Square, Fort Collins.

LAND Lecture: Dennis W. Rubba, PLA, ASLA, is Founding Principal of studioINSITE in Denver, Colorado and is an alum of the landscape architecture program at CSU. Dennis will be lecturing on Friday, November 7, 2014 in NESB B101 at noon.

During the ASLA Annual Meeting 2014, CSU will be having an Alumni Table at the Edible Landscape Celebration on Saturday, November 22, at the Mile High Station from 8:00-11:00 pm. This is a ticketed event and are not sold at the door.
