Database

The CSU Crop Variety Testing Program, under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Johnson, annually conducts winter wheat variety trials at multiple locations throughout Colorado. These trials are conducted as a service to the Colorado wheat industry to provide reliable, unbiased, science-based comparisons of available varieties under a broad range of production conditions in eastern Colorado.

The Colorado Wheat Variety Database provides complete access to variety information and data from these trials in addition to official state variety trials in several Great Plains states (Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Texas, and South Dakota).

The database may be used to find up-to-date wheat variety information, display data from individual trial locations, generate summaries across multiple trial locations and years, and generate head-to-head comparisons for a pair of varieties of interest.

TheĀ database may be accessed online at Ā –Ā ramwheatdb.com.

Wheat Variety Information

Varieties may be searched by name, with one or two varieties, and the output can be a form or a tabular layout. Varieties may also be searched based on any number of criteria specified using the pulldowns.
The variety characteristics table shows all of the varieties that meet the specified criteria. The table may be sorted differently by clicking on any of the column headers.
The form layout shows the origin, year of release, market class, pedigree, and trait characteristics of the variety. A key explaining the trait characteristics may be displayed by clicking on "show key".

Multiple Trial Summary

Select one to four years for the summary using the pulldowns, select the datasets to use, and click display. Restrict your choices to one or two datasets otherwise very few varieties will appear in the summary.

Head-to-Head Comparisons

Select two varieties with the pulldowns, select the datasets to use, click display.
The number and percentage of trials where one variety is better than the other appears above the table. At each location the better variety is bolded. Click on the columns to sort the data table differently. Sorting from low to high yield of one variety can help show differences in drought tolerance or high moisture yield responsiveness of the two varieties.
The averages of the two varieties are shown below the table along with the percentage of trials where the variety is in the top statistical LSD grouping (percentage of trial wins). The averages for yield and test weight are compared statistically using a paired t-test procedure.
The variety responses of the two varieties from low to high yielding locations can be compared. In this case the green variety (Byrd) is expected to yield more than the blue variety (Hatcher) across the spectrum of trial conditions.
