Biography
Dr. Miller grew up in a small town in northwest Wisconsin, where he spent time fishing, hunting and gardening. His interest in horticulture began when he was about twelve years old, when a neighbor lady gave him some dahlia, gladiolus and canna bulbs. From that summer on, his interest with flower bulbs and ornamental plants grew. In a nutshell, he is a plant geek!
He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) in horticulture, having had a great mentor and advisor, Dr. Terry Ferriss. Miller engaged in a couple of internships; one in one in the Netherlands for a commercial greenhouse cut flower producer and one in California with Pan American Seed and plant breeding—both of which had a significant impact on his education. After UWRF, Miller continued on at Cornell University for a M.S. and Ph.D., working with Dr. Mark Bridgen and Dr. Bill Miller, respectively. After completing the Master’s degree, Chad received a fellowship to spend a year living and conducting floriculture and breeding research in the Netherlands.
Miller has always enjoyed the academic setting and enjoys teaching horticulture. It was his aspiration to be able to help others learn not only about plants but help others learn about themselves and the world around them. Miller is excited about horticulture with the plethora of opportunities to pursue two passions—horticulture and teaching.
Dr. Miller strives to find the appropriate work/personal life balance. Outside of his career, he loves to travel and experience new cultures. His favorite place—well, one of his favorite places is the Netherlands. He also loves to cook, trying new dishes and sharing them with friends and family. Other activities include gardening, birding, photography, racquetball, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. And of course, spending time with his corgis.
Research Interests
I have worked on developing a multidisciplinary research program related to landscape and greenhouse plant production. Research has included physiological studies of ornamentals, applied research greenhouse production of various crops, and landscape plant evaluations. Other research priorities would focus on ornamental plant development and management that are (more) environmentally conscious (e.g., water use and conservation; salt tolerance; heat tolerance) for the landscape.
Throughout the course of my career, I have been working to develop my Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) skills. Engaging in SoTL research assists in greater understanding how students learn in any specific course. In return I can develop and improve my teaching methods and practices so I can further engage and promote student learning and development. This research can also be useful for other faculty, graduate students with an interest in teaching, and other educators to advance our discipline.
