Biography
I am Jose Daniel Merchan Espitia, I got a veterinarian and animal scientist from Pedagogical and
Technological University of Colombia. As a veterinarian working in the dairy industry for the past 11
years, I would like to expand my knowledge and contribute from academia to solving some of the
problems dairy producers are currently facing. I have witnessed how the academy has had a positive
impact on the industry by bringing practical solutions that at the end of the day can contribute to
producing milk more efficiently.
I started my work experience in farms in the Dominican Republic in 2010 and in 2012 I decided to do an
internship for a year at Aurora Organic Farms in Colorado and Texas, undoubtedly it was an amazing
experience that opened and changed my vision, during that time I also had the opportunity to work with
Dr. Pablo Pinedo through AgriLife Research Texas, due to my good performance as an intern, this
company offered me a full time position, where I worked for 7 years as a Herd Health Specialist training
employees in areas such as herd health, reproduction, milking and vaccination protocols. We created a
certification program for each of these areas, I was 100% involved in this certification program since
2013 to 2017. In addition to the training, I had helped in different research with Texas A&M University,
Colorado State University and Ohio State University, and during the last three years there I worked with
the transition period management, maternity, and dry cows’ areas, improving the time that the cows
spend at maternity, evaluating body condition scores, fresh cows’ performance to assure a superior
reproduction and health during their lactation. Additionally, I performed the pregnancy checks of all
Colorado dairies, working directly with the reproduction management, providing constant feedback to
managers and employees improvement opportunities to achieve the company goals.
In 2020, I took a new challenge in my employee journey, and started working for ABS Global Inc, a
bovine genetic company as a North America Technical Service Consultant, where my role is to facilitate
on-farming reproductive and dairy management training and consulting for ABS partnership farms in NA
working alongside the key account management team.
My overall career goal is to continue improving my knowledge and skills to provide the best outcomes
for the dairy community.
