Foundation Seed
What Is Foundation Seed?
CSU Agronomy Foundation Seed is a member of the Colorado Seed Growers Association and works collaboratively with CSU’s Wheat Breeding Program and the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation to make newly developed Colorado wheat varieties available to the public. The AFS provides high-quality foundation seed to CSGA member seed producers and growers who, in turn, offer Registered and Certified classes of seed to the public. Seed is only provided to producers and growers after going through laboratory processes that test for purity, germination, seed count and additional requirements. The seed is also surveyed to limit weeds, off-types and various diseases.
The AFS fills the CSU mission of providing education and training for students in Agriculture through Agriculture Workforce Development grants provided by the USDA. Four to six student interns are trained yearly to learn skills in genetic purity, identity maintenance and field scouting.
